Bhutan - what does this very name echo to everyone? It echoes to be a country which is full
of lush green picturesque valleys, elevated high peaks and mountains, dense forests,
captivating meadows and diverse fascinating flora and fauna; a country where peace and
tranquillity prevail across its length and breadth through numerous monasteries and sacred
chants. A true heaven, a true Paradise or a Shangri-La, as it is often called, on the earth.
Rarely are the descriptions of or references to other aspects when it happens to be a country,
namely, Bhutan.
However, this might have found justifiable grounds a few decades back. Bhutan today is a
completely transformed country, a vibrant and emerging economy, simultaneously upholding,
of course, its roots firmly intact, while striking a fine balance between its ecological and
spiritual systems on the one hand, and the modern developmental challenges on the other
hand. There are institutions, organisations, banks, systems, and mechanisms that meet the
modern-day standards. Thus, it is no longer merely a Shangri-la now. It is more than that.
This book, "Bhutan: Beyond Shangri-La", focuses mainly on two systems prevalent in Bhutan
– the Financial System and Fiscal System. While the Financial System includes money
market, capital market, financial institutions, banks and so on, the fiscal system refers to the
taxation system applicable within the country. Both systems have been described vividly and
lucidly in the book.
The book will be useful for the readers as it overrides the preconceived notions about the
country and highlights the dimensions that are not talked about much in the literature on
Bhutan.
