Banking system in any country is an intermediary through which the savings of the savers are
channelled to the borrowers or loan-seekers who, in turn, supposedly, utilise these funds for
productive activities. The banking system is also the mechanism through which the
government of the country regulates, monitors or directs the money circulation within the
country. The monetary policy of the government, for all practical purposes, gets translated
into reality through the banking system of the country.
Bhutan's banking system, similar to other countries, consists of commercial banks (though
small in size and number) and a central bank. The commercial banks have branches in
various parts of the country, catering to the needs of the sparsely populated or densely
populated geographical areas of the country, predominantly dotted with mountains, hills and
forests. The central bank oversees the functioning of commercial banks and acts as the
'Banker of the Banks', as is said generally while referring to any Central Bank. It also acts as
an organ through which governments' policies, particularly monetary ones, are implemented.
The present book "Banking System of Bhutan" vividly describes the history, growth and the
current status of the banks in Bhutan. It also analyses their performances over the given time
frame in terms of deposit mobilisation, loans and advances, non-performing assets (NPAs)
and so on. The central bank of Bhutan has also been discussed along with the assessment of
the functions, any Central Bank has to perform.
The book is a milestone, filling the vacuum in the literature on Bhutan, particularly related to
its banking sector. It will be a highly useful reading for students, scholars, researchers and
any inquisitive mind desirous of knowing more about Bhutan's banking system.
