Money in any economy flows in two types of markets – money market and capital market.
Money market is a short-term concept which commonly is related to a period of less than one
year, while capital market is conceptually a long-term phenomenon. Capital market consists
of stock market, long-term debt market, and other such instruments.
Stock market or stock exchange, very frequently, is also called as the barometer of the
economy. Fluctuations or movements in the index of the stock market is said to reflect the
health or the future directions of the economy in terms of its economic growth, investors’
sentiments, corporate earnings or wealth effects.
Contrary to the general presumption Bhutan has a vibrant and active stock exchange and
purchase and sale of stocks is a regular phenomenon. Though the large rural population of the
country is not heavily engaged in stock market transactions yet the volumes of transactions,
as data reveal, are not discouraging.
The present book "Bhutanese Capital Market" highlights various features of Bhutan’s capital
market analysing simultaneously its depth and spread across the country. The book will
predominantly be useful for students, scholars, researchers, capital market analysts on the one
hand, and policy makers on the other hand. The contents including the technical terminology
have been explained in simple language and are easy to understand and grasp.
